COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Camby Returns, Helps No. 5 UMass Win

Lou Roe scored 20 points and Marcus Camby, returning from an injury, added 11 points in 18 minutes of playing in pain as No. 5 Massachusetts defeated Duquesne, 73-56, Thursday night at Amherst, Mass.

Camby has been out because of a strained left hamstring since Feb. 1. The 6-foot-11 sophomore did not start but checked in after four minutes.

UMass, 19-3 overall and 10-2 in the Atlantic 10, rolled to a 41-19 halftime lead over Duquesne (8-14, 5-9).

UMass guard Mike Williams, the school’s career leader in steals with 145, was suspended indefinitely by Coach John Calipari for breaking unspecified team rules. Williams was suspended for three games at the beginning of the season for academic reasons.

No. 2 North Carolina 66, Clemson 39--Donald Williams, who had made five three-point shots in a game nine times in his career, made six of nine attempts to lead the Tar Heels (20-2, 10-2) to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Pat Sullivan, a 6-8 reserve forward who provides depth on the Tar Heels’ front line, played for the first time since having back surgery on Dec. 8 and scored four points, had three rebounds and dished out two assists.

North Carolina has had 25 consecutive 20-victory seasons, upping its own NCAA record, and is 41-0 against Clemson at Chapel Hill.

Clemson (13-8, 3-8) made only two of 12 three-point shots in the first 20 minutes while playing its deliberate offense.

No. 19 Oregon 88, Washington 63--Orlando Williams scored 20 points and Jeff Potter 16 as the Ducks (15-5, 7-4) rolled to their second consecutive home-court Pacific 10 blowout. Freshman Mark Sanford scored 27 points for the Huskies (2-10, 6-14).

Washington State 94, Oregon State 85--Sophomore guard Isaac Fontaine scored 15 of his 24 points in the second half for the Cougars (12-8, 7-5) in the Pac-10 game at Corvallis, Ore. Washington State swept Oregon State (6-14, 3-8) for the second consecutive season.

OTHER GAMES

In an Atlantic 10 game played under tight security at Piscataway, N.J., Temple defeated Rutgers, 62-54, and there was no repeat of last week’s student protest that forced suspension of Rutgers’ game against UMass at halftime. Rick Brunson scored 25 for Temple (14-7, 7-5). Rutgers is 9-12, 4-7. . . . Utah ran its record to 20-5, 11-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, with a 61-51 victory at San Diego State. The Aztecs are 7-14, 2-11.
