SOUTHERN SECTION DIV. IV-AA BOYS’ BASKETBALL : Corona del Mar Hangs On to Eliminate Beaumont, 49-46

Brian Fracalosy had 17 points, including eight in the final quarter, as host Corona del Mar edged Beaumont, 49-46, in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV-AA boys’ basketball playoffs Friday night.

Eric Schiff had 11 points and Dominic DeGrazier had 10 for the Sea Kings (15-11), who will play Encino Crespi (13-13) in the second round Tuesday at a site to be determined. Crespi defeated Laguna Beach, 59-47.

The first half was sloppy with the teams combining for 25 turnovers.

The biggest lead for either team was seven for the Sea Kings, 39-32, with 5 minutes 45 seconds remaining.

Beaumont (15-11) closed the deficit to 47-46 on Kaleb Ranney’s layup. Ranney finished with 16 points and Manny Rodriguez and Mario Gordillo each had 13 points for the Cougars.

Fracalosy made two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to give Corona del Mar a 49-46 lead.

Beaumont had one more chance to tie the score, but Rodriguez’s three-pointer missed with time running out.

With the turnovers and missed opportunities, both teams had trouble scoring in the first half. The Sea Kings trailed, 16-15, at halftime, but Schiff had eight of his 11 points in the third quarter, helping Corona del Mar take a 29-28 lead.

DeGrazier hit back-to-back three-pointers to widen the Corona del Mar lead to 49-42.

In another Division IV-AA game:

Encino Crespi 59, Laguna Beach 47--Brandon Block scored 24 points for the Artists, who finished 16-8. The scored was tied, 23-23, at the half, but Crespi outscored Laguna Beach, 14-6, in the third quarter.
