HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Gottlieb Helps Tustin Win 17th in a Row

Tustin High, ranked No. 4 in the Southland by The Times, improved its winning streak to 17 games by beating Placentia El Dorado, 74-64, in a Southern Section Division II-A second-round game Tuesday night at El Dorado High.

Senior guard Doug Gottlieb, who signed with Notre Dame last November, scored 25 points and had 10 assists and four steals for Tustin (26-1). Teammate David Lalazarian added 20 points and nine rebounds.

El Dorado, led by David Griffins’ 16 points, finished 19-9.

No. 2 Compton Dominguez 106, Santa Fe 28--Dominguez (26-2) had 30 steals and held host Santa Fe (12-10) to 14 points in the first half of a II-A second-round game.

Senior forward Tommy Prince led Dominguez with 21 points.

No. 3 Inglewood 72, Ridgecrest Burroughs 49--Paul Pierce, a 6-foot-7 guard, scored a game-high 36 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Sentinels (25-3) to their 16th consecutive victory in a II-A second-round game at Inglewood.

No. 15 Rancho Santa Margarita 60, Anaheim Canyon 40--Allen Krist scored 17 points and had nine rebounds as Santa Margarita (25-2) won the II-A second-round game at Canyon (12-16).

Pasadena Muir 62, Cypress 59--Duane Curtis had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Muir (19-10), an at-large entry from the Pacific League, in a II-A second-round game at home.

San Bernardino Pacific 74, Los Altos 65--Center Brent Burnett scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Pacific (23-4) in a II-A second-round game at home.

Los Altos (19-8) kept it close through three quarters with an outside shooting game that produced 12 three-point baskets.

Corona del Mar 66, Encino Crespi 49--Trailing, 20-17, in the second quarter, Corona del Mar (16-11) went on a 36-4 run on its way to a IV-AA quarterfinal victory at Agoura High.

Crespi (13-14) scored only two points in the third quarter and did not make a second-half field goal until early in the fourth quarter.

Verbum Dei 83, Cerritos Valley Christian 46--Defending IV-A champion Verbum Dei (20-5) moved a step closer to another championship-game appearance with a quarterfinal victory over Valley Christian (14-10) at Gahr High. Guard Deon Williams led the Eagles with 16 points.
