A Panorama City man was fatally shot by a passerby as he sat in a parked van with friends, Los Angeles police said Thursday.

Thomas Steen, 25, was sitting in the van with Gerald Oglesby, 26, and an unidentified 17-year-old along Parthenia Street near the intersection of Noble Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, when several shots were fired into the van by an assailant who fled on foot, Los Angeles Police Detective Marshall White said.

Steen was hit in the torso, Oglesby in the legs, White said. With gunshot wounds in both legs, Oglesby drove to Mission Community Hospital, where Steen was pronounced dead on arrival a few minutes later.

White said detectives do not yet have a motive for the slaying. “We have to go back to what happened yesterday or the day before, see who they may have gotten angry,” he said.
