New Grand Jurors Needed by County

Share

Applicants are being sought for the 1995-96 Ventura County grand jury, which will begin its one-year term July 1.

The grand jury performs a variety of functions, including handing down criminal indictments and investigating local government to pinpoint problems and suggest solutions.

The county’s Superior Court judges will select 30 finalists from the applicants. Then, 19 grand jurors will be selected by lottery in a ceremony June 30. Those not chosen for the panel will become alternates, to be selected for service should a vacancy arise during the year.

Applicants must commit to work approximately 40 hours a week. Grand jurors are paid $20 a day for each day they work, plus mileage, said Sandi Hatmaker of the jury services department.

Six finalists will be chosen from each of the county’s five supervisorial districts. The 30 finalists will reflect as closely as possible the county’s population ratio with regards to sex, age, race and family income.

The deadline for applications is April 7. Applications may be obtained by calling 654-5025.
