MOORPARK : Council OKs Edge for Local Vendors
Hoping to give a hand to local businesses, the Moorpark City Council has approved a policy to buy goods and services from local vendors whenever possible.
The council Wednesday unanimously approved a plan that gives local merchants a slight advantage in the city’s bidding process.
Under the new policy, local businesses would receive a credit worth 1% of their bid. The advantage is equal to the amount of sales-tax revenue returned to the city by the state.
“If we’re going to get that money back by buying local we should include that in the cost estimate,” Montgomery said.
In addition, vendors from outside the city would have to include the cost of transportation in their bids.
Montgomery said the new policy is good for the local economy.
It is still unclear how many goods and services the city can purchase locally. But as the city grows, there will be more and more opportunities to use local vendors, Montgomery said.
