PREP ROUNDUP : La Quinta’s Demarest Gets Victory No. 400

La Quinta baseball Coach Dave Demarest earned his 400th career victory as the Aztecs beat Diamond Bar, 8-1, in a Loara tournament consolation game Wednesday at La Quinta.

Demarest, 400-151 in 22 years at La Quinta, has led the Aztecs to eight league titles and the Southern Section Division III championship last season.

Jhamal Dawkins had two hits, scored a run and drove in three runs and Joe Garcia (2-0) gave up one run and six hits for the Aztecs (2-1).

In other Loara tournament games:

El Dorado 6, Marina 4--El Dorado’s Jordan De Jong gave up four runs and seven hits for the complete-game victory in the quarterfinals. Chris Beck and Craig Patterson each had doubles for the Golden Hawks.

Dana Hills 4, Huntington Beach 2--Joe Yager had two hits with a run batted in, and Adam Green doubled, driving in two runs in the third in a consolation game. Chris Toomey struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings.

Santiago 9, Riverside J.W. North 5--Christian Cortez had three hits, including two triples, drove in three runs and scored once and Rafael Robledo had two hits and two runs scored for host Santiago (1-2) in consolation play.

In the Newport Beach Elks tournament:

Tustin 10, Saddleback 4--Rick Gonzalez had three hits, scored two runs and pitched five innings to earn the victory for host Tustin (3-0) in the second round. Eddie Mejia hit a grand slam in the third for Saddleback (1-1).

Trabuco Hills 11, El Modena 10--Jake Anderson walked with the bases loaded to score Josh Gause with the eventual winning run in the fifth inning for visiting Trabuco Hills (1-1) in consolation play.

Matt Maslowski had two hits, scored a run and had an RBI, and J.C. Pintsak had three hits and two runs scored for the Mustangs.

In nonleague baseball:

Ocean View 2, Anaheim 1--On his 16th birthday, first baseman Daniel Kehr hit a bases-empty home run in the fifth to put Ocean View ahead, 2-1. He also had the game-winning catch. With two out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, Anaheim hit a blooper headed toward right. Kehr jumped, made a stab at the ball and it bounced off his glove. Then he caught it with his bare hand.

In nonleague golf:

Capistrano Valley 190, El Toro 192--Scott Rynders was the medalist for Capistrano Valley (3-0), shooting two-under-par 33 at Marbella. Jesse Hayden shot one-under 34 for El Toro (0-2).

Cypress 204, Western 236--Junior Eric Wang, the medalist in every match Cypress has played this season, shot three-under 32 at Cypress Golf Club. Wang had three birdies and six pars for Cypress (3-1).

Villa Park 210, University 212--Ryan Michel was the medalist for Villa Park (3-2), shooting four-over 40 at Green River.

In the Fullerton softball tournament:

Rosary 3, El Dorado 1--Julie Luna went two for three with two RBIs for Rosary (4-1), which took fifth place in the tournament. Luna picked up her second victory, giving up five hits. Regina Martin also had two hits for the Royals and scored the go-ahead run.

Villa Park 5, Ayala 0--Brandee McArthur struck out 17 batters, gave up only one hit in the consolation final. McArthur also hit her first home run of the season, a three-run homer in the fifth. Catcher Kendra Wood was two for three, including a home run in the sixth.

In nonleague softball:

San Clemente 3, Laguna Hills 1--Heather Hollis tripled in the fourth inning, then had an RBI single in the sixth, and went two for three. Pitcher Stephanie Swenson struck out six, with no walks and one hit.

Sonora 1, Santa Margarita 0--With one out in the bottom of the third, George Wisen singled and stole second and scored on a single by Jackie Anderson for Sonora (3-2). Santa Margarita is (2-3).

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Brea Olinda 89, Fullerton 81--Tad Murphy placed first in two individual events, as well as two medleys as Brea Olinda (2-0) handed Fullerton its second loss. Billy Brown finished first in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle for Fullerton.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Brea Olinda 114, Fullerton 56--Freshman Ashley Carter won the 200- and the 500-freestyle events, then paced the 400-freestyle relay team to first place as Brea Olinda remained unbeaten.

Estancia 97, La Quinta 74--Maria Uceda won the 100 butterfly in 1:09.9, Meghan Williams won the 500 freestyle (6:57.4) and 100 backstroke (1:16.0) and Aileen Bennett won the 200 free (2:21.5) for host Estancia (1-1).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Century 11 1/3, Westminster 9 2/3--In the final and deciding set, Javier Ortiz and Heri Cortiz defeated Westminster’s Hung Tran and Jimmy Soga, 7-6 (7-5). Century is 1-0.

Corona del Mar 15, Capistrano Valley 6--John Capello did not drop a game at No. 2 singles for Corona del Mar.

Irvine 18 2/3, Marina 2 1/3--Returning All-Sea View League player Tod Harrington dropped only three games at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Danny Moon and freshman Shakti Chemitigati swept at No. 2 doubles.

Loara 15 1/3, Servite 5 2/3--Freshman Ryan Moore swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Servite (1-2). In doubles, Randy Kato and Tan Nguyen swept their sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, for Loara (4-0).

Villa Park 13 1/3, El Toro 7 2/3--Ryan Hollis didn’t lose a game in sweeping his singles sets and Eric Wu and Jeremy Shaw swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, for host Villa Park (3-0).
