A domestic dispute turned deadly Monday when a man fatally shot his wife during an argument and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

The couple in the slaying-suicide, who police declined to identify, lived in the 1300 block of Windsor Road in Glendale with their three children for the past year, neighbors said.

“There was this big argument--we could hear yelling--and then all of a sudden, bam! bam!” said Jere Dufresne, who lives across the street. “As I looked outside I could see children running out of the house. They were all hysterical.”

Glendale police spokesman Chahe Kheuroghelian said authorities arrived shortly after the 4:21 p.m. shooting and found the dead woman lying face down in the street. The woman was shot by her husband on the sidewalk in front of their home and then died a few feet away in the street, he said.

Neighbors said the aftermath of the first shooting was mass commotion.

“After he shot her, the guy was waving around the gun outside and then walked back inside the house,” Dufresne said. The couple’s three children, believed to be ages 17, 9 and 7, as well as some teen-age friends of the eldest daughter, piled into the family car and sped away, he added.

When police arrived, the children returned and the eldest daughter told them, “He killed my mother,” Dufresne said.

A Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was called in and the neighborhood was evacuated because police thought the man had barricaded himself in the house. At 8:15 p.m., the man was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the house.

“It appeared that the suspect had shot himself immediately after he shot his wife,” said Deputy Matthew Rodriguez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
