OXNARD : Infant Abuse Inquiry Under Way by Police

Share

Ventura County Crimestoppers are looking for information to help in an investigation of possible infant abuse.

Authorities said a man pushing a baby stroller past the Women Infants and Children office on South C Street in Oxnard the afternoon of Dec. 16 suddenly rushed the 2-month-old male infant inside, trying to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The baby was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he remained for a month before being released into the custody of other family members, said Detective Sgt. Gerry Beck of the Port Hueneme Police Department, which is assisting in the investigation.

The infant, Beck said, suffered from “shaken baby syndrome,” a condition in which violent shaking damages blood vessels in the brain.

“This was an intentional, forceful act,” Beck said. “We’re trying to jog people’s memories to see if they can help us out.”

Police believe the baby’s injuries were suffered within a few hours of the incident at the WIC office.

Police urge anyone who may have seen the baby being injured to leave anonymous tips and information by calling Ventura County Crimestoppers at 986-TALK or 988-TALK.
