PREP GOLF ‘95: PREVIEW : Six Teams to Watch : Sunny Hills
Coach: Tim Devaney (ninth year).
1994: 14-1 in a freelance schedule. Won the Southern Section team title, beating two-time defending champion Palm Desert in a playoff; finished fifth in the CIF-SCGA tournament.
Key returners: Mike Kim, So.; Jenny Lee, Sr.; Terry Noe, Jr.; Jin Park, So.; John Park, So.; Doug Sims, Jr.
Key newcomers: Francisco Chung, Jr., Jason Kim, Fr.
Outlook: The Lancers lost only one player to graduation--Matt Sims, who made the bogey putt that clinched the victory over Palm Desert--and appear to be stronger than ever. Sunny Hills has two of the best players in the county in Noe, who won the U.S. Junior Amateur championship last summer, and Lee, who won the CIF-SCGA girls’ title and has accepted a scholarship to Texas. Jin Park, John Park and Mike Kim aren’t too far behind. Devaney, also Sunny Hills’ football coach, takes a low-key approach. “Our matches are basically meaningless until the qualifying round, but they are all aggressive at practices and they all are, for the most part, pretty intense when they play,” Devaney said.
