Deaver Gets Revenge and a Victory

Share

Dick Deaver, who won sailing’s Congressional Cup in 1976 and ‘78, hadn’t forgotten when he lost it to Dave Perry on a protest in 1983.

“That was really on our minds,” Deaver said after beating Perry to climax his perfect second day (4-0) in the Masters Regatta for former winners at Long Beach on Tuesday. “(It was) a 12-year pay-back.”

Deaver, after a 1-3 start, shares fourth place behind co-leaders Dennis Durgan, Henry Sprague and Perry, who are 6-2 with 10 sets remaining through Friday. The races may be watched from Belmont Pier.

Tuesday’s strong winds to 18 knots produced several collisions among the Catalina 37s. Skip Allan hit Ted Turner in his second race and ran into Tom Pickard twice in his third race.

Turner (1-7) beat Bill Ficker in the day’s first race--the first win for either of the former America’s Cup winners.

Then Ficker beat Scott Allan and Pickard (0-8). Scott Allan went from 4-0 Monday to 0-4 Tuesday.
