COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Sparks Sets Mark for Concordia

Brandon Sparks set a school record by striking out 18, allowing one unearned run and three hits in Concordia’s 9-1 baseball victory over Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday at La Verne.

Sophomore catcher A.J. Applefield had two hits and two runs batted in, freshman shortstop Ben Kindreich added three hits and an RBI and second baseman Mike Lucra had two hits and scored two runs for the Eagles (10-10).

The previous strikeout mark was 12 in a nine-inning game.

In another nonconference baseball:

CS Fullerton 18, Loyola Marymount 1--Center fielder Mark Kotsay drove in seven runs with a double, a triple and a grand slam for the top-ranked Titans (21-3).

Ted Silva (7-0) pitched three innings, striking out five.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Southern California College 7, Whittier College 2--For SCC (8-2), Ryan Lewis defeated Jeff Heynen without losing a game, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Lewis and Ross Andel defeated Mark Hoogs and Hesham Busefi, 6-0, 6-0.
