Master’s Rolls an 11, Rocks Southwestern : College basketball: Mustangs come out firing in the second half, take an 86-72 first-round victory.

The Master’s College sank 11 consecutive shots to start the second half and went on to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma State, 86-72, Wednesday night at the Mabee Center in a first-round game of the NAIA Division I men’s basketball tournament.

The Mustangs (30-4) won their 17th consecutive game and advanced to play unseeded Central Washington tonight.

Central Washington beat ninth-ranked St. Mary’s of San Antonio, Tex., 76-64.

Master’s trailed most of the first half and was behind, 38-35, at intermission.

But the second half belonged to the eighth-seeded Mustangs. They outscored Southwestern, 22-4, the first 5 1/2 minutes after the break to take a 57-42 lead.

Master’s made 65% of its shots (17 of 26) in the second half and didn’t miss in the first seven minutes. Southwestern was unable to mount much of a rally.,

Mike Penberthy had 21 points and six assists for the Mustangs, Doug Leaman added 13 of his 18 points in the second half and James Mosley scored 16 points.

“We were disappointed in the way we played the first half,” said Bill Oates, Master’s coach. “We were giving up too many second shots the first half and weren’t playing the kind of defense we’re capable of.

“We’ve shot the ball well all season. That first 10 minutes or so of the second half put us in a good position.”

Damion Porter had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Southwestern (20-12).
