Waste Commission Considers Disbanding

Share

The Ventura County Waste Commission agreed Thursday to explore disbanding the 6-year-old agency, which advises the Board of Supervisors on countywide waste issues.

The recent formation of the Western Ventura County Waste Management Authority prompted the move, said Supervisor Maggie Kildee, who is a member of both agencies. The east county has had its own waste task force for several years.

The authority and the east county task force conduct many of the same functions as the waste commission.

Kildee said the 12-member commission will explore transferring some responsibilities to the Ventura County Council of Governments, which includes representatives from each of the county’s 10 cities. That would enable officials from the east and west county to discuss countywide trash issues, Kildee said.

Kildee said the commission will send two of its members to the Council of Governments’ meeting next week to discuss the proposal further. The dissolution of the Waste Commission would ultimately have to be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
