Why Fight the Power? Send Mater Dei Packing

Share

More and more, student-athletes, teachers, coaches, parents and sportswriters are questioning and complaining about the (Southern Section’s) placement of Mater Dei in the South Coast League. It is common knowledge schools concede league championships to Mater Dei, so why play Mater Dei at all? Let’s deny Mater Dei and its fans their sadistic satisfaction of humiliating opponents. I am not implying that the schools in the league are afraid to play Mater Dei, but why play any game when you know in advance the deck is stacked against you?

The only solution to establish parity at the high school level is to let Mater Dei and the other private school “power houses” in Southern California (who have virtually no recruiting restrictions) compete in a league of their own. Wasn’t that the way it used to be anyway?
