Four-Star Films : ‘East of Eden’

Share

Elia Kazan’s vibrant ode to adolescent torment and the war between generations is taken from the last third of John Steinback’s Salinas Valley epic. The biblical allegory lumbers slightly, but there’s a line of poetic naturalism and edgy tension throughout. All the performers, especially James Dean, pictured, in his debut as a lead, really blaze. With Julie Harris (also pictured) and Jo Van Fleet--both as extraordinary as Dean--Raymond Massey, Burl Ives and Albert Dekker. The script is by Paul Osborne (AMC Saturday at 2:45 p.m.).
