SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Pomona police are searching for a woman who kidnaped a 5-day-old boy early Monday afternoon.

The woman, who might be named Joanne, befriended the baby’s mother, Maria Magana of Pomona, about a month ago when Magana was pregnant with twins, Pomona Police Sgt. Michael Ervin said. Magana was walking in the rain from a doctor’s appointment with her two other children, ages 2 and 3, when the woman pulled over and offered to give them a ride home, Ervin said.

The women became friends and the suspect visited Magana after she gave birth to twin sons, Ervin said.

Monday afternoon, the woman had arranged to give Magana and her children a ride to the public assistance office on Holt Avenue, police said. About 1 p.m., the woman pulled into an alley behind the office to drop off Magana and her children, Ervin said.

The woman helped Magana get out of the car with three of her children. She then told Magana she could not park in the alley and offered to bring the other baby into the office, Ervin said. But after a few minutes, the woman had not returned and Magana became suspicious. When she could not find the woman, Magana called police.

The kidnaper is described as Latina, 24 to 28 years old, 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall. She weighs 160 to 170 pounds and has a light complexion, a heavy build and black hair that she wears in a bun.

Police say two vehicles might be involved. On the day of the kidnaping, the woman was driving a maroon Ford Thunderbird with tinted side windows and a maroon interior. But Magana also told police she had seen the woman driving a white Chevrolet Blazer or Ford Bronco.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives Greg Guenther or Allen Maxwell at (909) 620-2095 or (909) 620-2151.
