NHL ROUNDUP : Loss Streak Reaches Six for Rangers

Fame remains, perhaps, but success is fleeting for the Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers, who have everybody except the teams they lose to upset at them.

Still, that’s a growing number of happy people.

The Rangers lost their sixth in row Saturday night when Andrei Kovalenko and Paul MacDermid scored first-period goals and the Nordiques made them stand up for a 2-1 victory at Quebec.

“Losing six in a row is beyond amazing,” said Ranger Coach Colin Campbell. “To go down fighting, kicking and screaming is the only way to lose.

“But to wave the white flag the way we did in the first period, that’s totally unacceptable. Guys aren’t driving for the net. They’re playing complacently.”

Quebec, which has won five of its last six games, jumped back into first place in the NHL’s overall standings, one point ahead of the idle Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Nordiques improved their home record to 13-1-3.

The Rangers’ six-game losing streak is their longest since they dropped seven in a row in April of the 1992-93 season and is the fifth-longest in club history.

They are 2-7 in one-goal games and have scored only eight goals in their six-game losing streak.
