COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CSUN Tripped in Five Games

John Baer had 35 kills and Oliver Heitmann added 28 but Cal State Northridge lost to San Diego State, 15-13, 11-15, 8-15, 15-13, 15-7, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match at San Diego State.

The Matadors (13-8, 10-5 in the MPSF) had fewer blocks, 33-23, and more attack errors, 35-28, than the Aztecs (9-8, 6-6).

The Matadors also had more service errors, 18-15, and fewer service aces, 7-5, than San Diego State.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 7, Dartmouth 5--Jim Young’s two-run home run in the 11th inning gave the Mustangs (11-11) a nonconference victory at Master’s.

Master’s blew an early 4-1 lead and stayed alive in the 10th on a double by Matt Huter and a run-scoring single by Derek Bell.

Ventura 5, Canyons 3--Victor Moreno had two hits and drove in two runs for host Ventura (12-6-1, 6-3) in a Western State Conference game.

Gabi Halcovich’s bases-loaded double with two out in the ninth drove in three runs for the Cougars (9-12, 5-4).

Bakersfield 7, Moorpark 4--Bakersfield scored three runs in the ninth to break a 4-4 tie in a WSC game at Bakersfield.

Jason Adamson had two home runs and drove in three runs, and Gabe Kapler had three hits, including a triple, for Moorpark (15-8, 5-4).

Pierce 3, Oxnard 0--Jason Warren pitched a five-hitter and retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced in a WSC game at Oxnard.

Dave Cipolla went three for three with two RBI singles for the Brahmas (12-11, 8-1).

Cuesta 15, Valley 2--The visiting Monarchs (7-13-2, 4-5-1) committed 10 errors in the WSC game. Troy Silva had three hits, including a two-run home run for Cuesta (13-10, 6-4).

Antelope Valley 7, San Bernardino 3--The Marauders (11-9-1, 6-5) used home runs by Eric Cole and Will Wallace to down the Indians (12-12, 5-5) in a Foothill Conference game in San Bernardino.

Hancock 2, Mission 1--Pete Quittner scored the winning run on an error in a WSC game at Hancock. Ray Rivera pitched a complete game for Mission. John Toven went two for four and drove in a run.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 7-10, Pomona-Pitzer 1-9--Heidi Stevens had three hits in the first game, including her third home run, and earned the save in the second game for the Regals in an SCIAC doubleheader at Cal Lutheran. Tracy Little had three hits in the second game for Cal Lutheran (14-6, 12-2).

Pierce 6-6-8, Rio Hondo 0, Cerritos 3, Citrus 0--The Brahmas swept three schools in the East Los Angeles tournament at South Gate Park. Brede Nivens had two home runs and eight RBIs.
