Developers built thousands of tract homes in Orange County during the 1950s, rapidly turning farms into suburban neighborhoods.
Many of these homes were ranch-style, expansive single-story dwellings with garages. In some neighborhoods, the houses looked almost identical.
But several upscale developments in the county were built to look distinctive. Eichler Homes had a futuristic look, with open central courtyards, floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights. Cinderella Homes were designed to resemble ornate “storybook” homes. They included wood-shake roofs, gables and flower boxes, according to the book “A Hundred Years of Yesterdays.”
