It’s more of a Surface Street Series than Freeway Series, but since the major leaguers are on strike, the replacement Angels and Dodgers will continue their traditional preseason rivalry beginning tonight in Anaheim Stadium.

Tony Mack, a 33-year-old right-hander who made his only regular-season major league start in 1985, will pitch for the Angels against Dodger right-hander Tom McCarthy in the 7 p.m. game.

The Angels have sold about 12,000 tickets and have given away 30,000 more to school and youth groups and charities. The Freeway Series usually attracts crowds in the 45,000-range in Anaheim.

Dodger right-hander Jody Treadwell will face Angel left-hander Jim Campbell Saturday night at 7 in Dodger Stadium. Angel right-hander Steve Peck is scheduled to start Sunday’s 1 p.m. game in Dodger Stadium, but the Dodgers had not named their starter as of Thursday afternoon.

The Dodgers appear to be one of baseball’s best replacement teams, having gone 20-7 in Grapefruit League games. Their top hitters are first baseman Jay Kirkpatrick at .395 and right fielder Tito Landrum at .326. The Angels went 12-11-1 in Cactus League play, and their top hitters are first baseman are Tyrone Boykin at .321 with five home runs and third baseman Pete Coachman at .375.
