Jensen Named Science, Math Dean at CSLB

James Jensen has been appointed dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Cal State Long Beach. Jensen has been a chemistry professor at the university since 1968 and has been acting dean of the college since 1993.

Elvia Delgadillo of Long Beach has been elected chairwoman of the Long Beach Transit Board. Delgadillo is a redevelopment project manager with the Los Angeles County Community Development Commission.

Sandra Gibson, the Long Beach Junior Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, has received the Belle Lowe Award for her leadership and community involvement. Gibson is executive director of the Public Corp. for the Arts and a board member of the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies.

Four seventh-grade students at Willowbrook Middle School in Compton won honors in the second annual Helene Curtis Hispanic Heritage Awards. The Southern California poster contest was sponsored by Cities in Schools, a national nonprofit dropout prevention program. The winners are Sophia Gonzales, first place; Gloria Valladarez, second; Rene Whitley, third, and Nyishia Carr, fourth. Gonzales’ teacher, Esther Woolfolk, also was honored.

John Bryson, chairman and chief executive officer of Southern California Edison Co., has received the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award and Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Long Beach Area Council Boy Scouts for contributions to the Long Beach community.

Robert Schumacher was elected chairman of the Physicians Advisory Committee of the Hospital Council of Southern California. The council, one of five in California, represents hundreds of health-care organizations in six counties. Schumacher is senior vice president of medical services at Long Beach Community Hospital Medical Center and past president of the American Lung Assn.-Long Beach.

Downey resident Max Lobo, a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona, has received the first Koll Construction Fellowship Award, which includes $20,000, from Youth Opportunities Foundation, a nonprofit Los Angeles foundation seeking to improve educational opportunities for Latinos. Lobo, one of the foundation’s 1994 Exceptional Scholars, is majoring in architecture.

Four Compton police officers have received City Council commendations for saving the lives of others. The officers are Christopher Paredes and Robert Thundercloud,for saving a child from choking; Oscar Nunez, who saved a baby’s life by administering CPR, and Ciprianno Nainggolan, who helped Nunez rescue a child from a carjacker, then captured and arrested the suspect.

David Tillman, a Long Beach resident, was elected president of the Long Beach Jewish Community Center. Tillman is chief executive officer of St. Mary Medical Center and a board member of the Long Beach Family Service Foundation. The center offers educational, social and recreational services, classes and celebrations of Jewish holidays.
