Jenson (69) Leads SCGA Qualifier

Chris Jenson of Palmdale shot a 69 Wednesday to lead the top flight of qualifiers for play in the Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Net Championship later this spring.

The qualifier, held at Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, is for the SCGA’s handicap championship, to be held May 1-2 at Monterey and Palm Valley country clubs in Palm Desert.

In the president’s flight, for players with handicap indexes of 3.5 to 7.4, Jenson edged Walter Kearns of West Hills by one shot.

Mike Lopata of West Hills shot 68 to win the vice-president’s flight (index of 7.5 to 12.4) and Floyd Welles of Simi Valley shot 70 to lead the treasurer’s flight (18.5 to 24.4).

Newbury Park High graduate Darren Humphrey shot a three-round total of 210 to win the individual championship of the Anteater Golf Invitational this week at Coto de Caza Country Club in Coto de Caza.

Humphrey, who shot a three-under 68 in the final round, led UC Irvine to the team title. The Anteaters finished at 879, five shots ahead of New Mexico State. Cal State Northridge finished 19th in the 20-team field at 948.

Steve Holmes, another Newbury Park graduate who plays for Irvine, finished tied for 14th at 224. Nolley Adkison of Northridge tied for 24th at 227.

Charlie Wi, a graduate of Westlake High who plays for California, shot a three-round total of 211 to place second at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Invitational last week at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara.

Wi finished one shot behind Arron Oberholser of San Jose State. Aki Amaya, a graduate of Birmingham High who plays at San Diego State, tied for seventh at 218 in a group that included Steve Holmes (UC Irvine, Newbury Park High) and Justin Wright (San Jose State, Buena High).

Mike Miller (UCLA, Hart High) tied for 28th at 224.

Baseball

Former Chatsworth High pitcher Derek Wallace was traded Wednesday by the Chicago Cubs to the Kansas City Royals as part of a deal for outfielder Brian McRae.

Wallace was a member of the Cubs’ 40-man roster. Last season, the right-hander pitched both as a starter and reliever at the double- and triple-A levels.

Wallace was a first-round draft pick out of Pepperdine in 1992. Last season, he was 2-9 with an earned-run average of 5.74 in double A. He was converted to a reliever in midseason, recorded eight saves and was promoted to triple A.

Miscellany

Andy Shaw and Kathy Blake-Small have been named Cal State Northridge’s athletes of the month for March.

Shaw, a junior designated hitter, leads the baseball team with a .406 average, 44 runs batted in, 11 home runs and 31 walks.

Blake-Small (12-4), a senior right-hander on the softball team, went 5-2 during the month with a 1.30 earned-run average.

Soccer

Chaminade senior Reza Zamani has signed a letter of intent with UC Santa Barbara.

Zamani, a four-year starter and the team’s center midfielder last season, scored 17 goals and had 12 assists. He was a first-team All-Mission League selection.

Zamani chose Santa Barbara over Fresno State, Cal and University of San Diego.

Track & Field

Poly High will play host to an international invitational today at 2:30 p.m. The meet will include 55 athletes from Australia and three City Section track teams.

The Australians will compete in heats against athletes from Grant, Sylmar and Poly highs. Admission is free.

Basketball

Newbury Park seniors Julie Wastell and Jann Thorpe were chosen co-players of the year in Division III by the Southern Section. Wastell and Thorpe averaged 11.8 and 14.4 points a game for the Panthers, who finished second in the state last month. Newbury Park’s Kara McKeown was also a first-team choice, as was Maggie Dixon of Notre Dame and Melissa Krolik of Calabasas.
