Complex Seeks More Police Patrols

In the wake of a double shooting, residents of a large condominium complex have told the City Council that they want a stronger police presence in their neighborhood.

More than a dozen residents of Capistrano Villas said at last week’s council meeting that the recent shooting was only one in a series of problems at the 810-unit development.

“We are here to tell you people that something is going to be done,” said Jack Allen, a Capistrano Villas resident who is also board president of one of the complex’s three homeowner associations.

Two youths were shot March 30 after an argument near La Zanja and Los Rios streets. An assailant got out of a car and opened fire, striking a 14-year-old in the hand and leg and an 18-year-old and the back and leg, Sheriff’s Lt. Paul Sullivan said. The shooting remains under investigation.

Since then, the city has stepped up patrols near the condominium complex, Sullivan said. “We put a lot of effort in there, but obviously we’re going to look at putting more effort in there,” he said.

Allen, who said he has lived in the complex for nine years, said that residents will continue to pressure city officials for tougher enforcement: “We’re not going to let it die,” he said.
