Before the post-World War II development boom, Huntington Beach was home to a picturesque river.
Freeman River--named after landowner J.G. Freeman--ran southeast from springs in Westminster to the Bolsa Chica wetlands, where it merged with the ocean.
The freshwater river was lined with willows and included many natural artesian wells. Its bank was a popular leisure spot for Orange County pioneers, who admired the area’s beauty.
As development and more extensive agriculture came to the area, the river slowly receded and eventually disappeared. It was hit especially hard by the digging of drainage ditches by farmers.
