THOUSAND OAKS : Library Will Move Collection in May

Share

About 290,000 books, magazines and videos from the earthquake-damaged Thousand Oaks Library are expected to be packed and moved to the former city hall at 2400 Willow Lane beginning next month.

The City Council is expected to decide today whether to pay BiblioTech Inc. $188,950 to move the library collection. The cost would be paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, officials said.

If the council approves the contract with the Connecticut firm, books and other materials would start to be relocated May 1, library Deputy Director Steve Brogden said.

“The council has already approved the concept of the move; the question is now who does it,” he said. Of four companies vying for the job, BiblioTech was the only one to submit the necessary bid, a city report said.

Because the move will take at least nine working days and additional time will be needed to prepare the temporary site for public use, reopening is not expected until June, Brogden said.

The Thousand Oaks Library suffered $2.5 million in damage during the Northridge earthquake last year. The building needs a new ceiling, lighting fixtures and carpet.

Relocating the library’s extensive collection to another site will cut construction time in half, officials said.

Repairs are scheduled to begin in June and be completed by next spring. The library plans to return to the Janss Road site by May, 1996.
