A 4-month-old girl was kidnaped from a shopping center Saturday by a woman who had brought the infant and her aunt there, supposedly to have pictures taken.

The three had gone to Sears in South Coast Plaza at 11:30 a.m. when the suspect, who used the name Rosemary Marquez, persuaded the aunt to go make a phone call. While she did, Marquez took the infant and disappeared, police said.

Marquez’s car, a gray, late-model, four-door Nissan with an unknown license number, was missing from the Sears parking lot, the aunt told police.

The child was identified as Stephanie Zamora of Santa Ana. Police would not release the names of the aunt or other family members.

The family met Marquez last Tuesday at their home in the Fairview Villas apartment complex in the 800 block of South Sullivan Street in Santa Ana, Sgt. Robert Phillips said. Marquez was going door to door telling people she was looking for someone who would baby-sit her own child.

Marquez then returned to the Zamora home on Saturday and persuaded Stephanie Zamora’s aunt that the three of them should go to Sears in South Coast Plaza for what turned out to be a phony modeling session for infants.

Marquez was described as a Latina in her early 30s, about 5 feet tall and between 180 and 200 pounds, with gold-streaked brown hair, brown eyes and stained, rotten teeth, police said. Her hair is shoulder length, but she usually wears it tied back, police said. Her nickname is Rosie.

She was last seen wearing light beige shorts, a green, short-sleeved T-shirt with flowers around the neck, a brown leather fanny pack and white tennis shoes, police said. She also was also wearing a Mickey Mouse watch and three gold rings.

The infant was wearing a red, long-sleeved top decorated with roses and red overalls. She has birthmarks on her back and leg.

Neither mall security guards nor a spokesman for the Sears store at South Coast Plaza would comment on the abduction.
