Two Simi Valley detectives looking for a suspected car thief critically wounded the man after he allegedly pointed a gun at them in Hollywood, police said Friday.

David Childress, 30, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after the 5:45 p.m. shooting Thursday at the Best Western Motel in the 2000 block of North Highland Avenue, said Simi Valley Police Lt. Tony Harper.

Childress saw Detectives Gene Hostetler and John Parks at the motel, recognized them and tried to flee, Harper said.

“As he ran, he pulled a handgun from his front pants pocket, turned and pointed it at the detectives,” Harper said. “Both detectives, fearing for their lives, then shot the suspect.”
