Given that Villa Park is the smallest city in Orange County, it seems appropriate that the community’s first school was so tiny that it fit in a simple farm shed.

According to the book “Villa Park: Then and Now,” the city’s Mountain View School was established in 1880 on James M. Smith’s ranch.

At first, the shed offered just enough space to house the school’s one teacher and four pupils.

But the student population soon began to grow. Starting in 1883, Villa Park classes were held in a much larger facility: two rooms.
