COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Silva, Olsen Pace CS Fullerton in 9-5 Victory Over Nevada

Ted Silva, making his first start since his no-hitter, pitched a nine-hitter as Cal State Fullerton beat host Nevada, 9-5, in Big West Conference baseball game Sunday.

Silva (12-1) no-hit Pacific in a 5-0 victory April 23. Against Nevada, he gave up three earned runs and struck out three for the top-ranked Titans.

D.C. Olsen had a double and drove in two runs for Fullerton (41-9, 15-3), which has a two-game lead over Long Beach in the conference race.

Tony Miranda, Mark Kotsay and Robert Matos each had two hits and drove in a run for Fullerton.

The Titans scored four runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Fullerton added one in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Justin Drizos and Wade Jackson, both from Saddleback College, had home runs for third-place Nevada (34-14, 11-6).

Also in the Big West Conference:

Long Beach State 8-9, Pacific 6-2--Tim Falsken and Jeff Tagliaferri had home runs in the first game for visiting Long Beach.

The 49ers took an 8-1 lead into the ninth, but Pacific scored five runs off reliever Justin Siegel. Gabe Gonzalez got the final three outs for his 11th save.

Jeff Liefer had three doubles and drove in four runs and Jason Hodges added three hits and drove in two runs for Long Beach in the second game.

Rocky Biddle (3-1) pitched a five-hitter and struck out 14 in the second game for Long Beach.

In the Big West Conference men’s tennis final:

Las Vegas 4, UC Irvine 1--It was the second consecutive year Las Vegas has beaten UC Irvine in the conference tournament final.

Fred Bach of Irvine beat Jules Pohjola, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, for the Anteaters’ only point.
