COLLEGE ROUNDUP : No. 2 Fullerton Survives Northridge Rally to Win

Second-ranked Cal State Fullerton built a five-run lead, then held off Cal State Northridge down the stretch for a 12-11 nonconference baseball victory Wednesday at Matador Field.

Mark Chavez earned his fourth save for Fullerton by shutting down Northridge in the eighth and ninth innings.

Tony Miranda got his eighth home run of the season to score three runs for the Titans (42-9).

Scott Hild started for the Titans and pitched three innings for the victory.

Though Fullerton had a 5-0 lead in the fourth, Northridge came back with two home runs in the bottom of the inning to score four runs.

Fullerton responded with six runs in the fifth, including a three-run triple by Mark Kotsay. But the Matadors again came back, this time with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to make the score 12-11.

In the ninth, Chavez issued a leadoff walk to Robert Fick and gave up a two-out single to Chad Thornhill. With the runners in motion on a 3-and-2 pitch, Jonathan Campbell struck out to end the game.

An hour before the game, Fullerton Coach Augie Garrido injured the Achilles’ tendon on his right foot while playing pepper with some players. According to a Fullerton trainer, the tendon may have ruptured.

In other nonconference baseball:

Concordia 9, CS San Bernardino 3--The Eagles got 13 hits to pick up their fourth consecutive victory. Concordia is 19-26.
