Share

A Bellflower motorcyclist was arrested Tuesday after zigzagging through rush-hour traffic at speeds of more than 130 m.p.h. as law enforcement officers pursued him in squad cars and helicopters, authorities said.

Ralph Brunt, 26, ran out of gas and was taken into custody by Long Beach police after racing across southern Los Angeles County streets and freeways for more than an hour as local television stations broadcast the scene.

Brunt was booked on a felony charge of evading a police officer, Sheriff’s Sgt. Leonard McCarthy said. Brunt was driving on a suspended license and faced two outstanding traffic warrants involving license violations, McCarthy said. He was released Tuesday night after posting $35,000 bail.

The chase began at 4:25 p.m. when sheriff’s deputies patrolling Brunt’s neighborhood tried to stop him for making an illegal turn on a Suzuki 750 motorcycle, McCarthy said. Brunt finally ran out of gas about 5:30 p.m. on 7th Street in Long Beach. He spread-eagle himself on the ground and waited for officers to arrest him.
