LA MIRADA : Ordinance Would Levy Fines Against Truants

Minors caught skipping school could face fines under an ordinance that the City Council has tentatively approved.

Truants face $135 fines for the first offense. Repeated offenses carry fines ranging from $270 to $675. Under the current system, wayward students face detention or suspension from classes.

George Christian, director of attendance for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, applauded the council’s action. “I find this a powerful way of dealing with kids who are on the street,” he said.

The ordinance also establishes a $75 fine for minors caught violating the city’s 10 p.m. curfew. The fine, which is to be paid to the city, will be added to county court penalties, which typically run about $50, La Mirada officials said.

The curfew fine is being established to help the city recoup law enforcement costs. “This is not meant to be a moneymaker,” said Councilman Wayne Rew. “The fine only covers the cost of the deputy.”

Youngsters who can’t afford to pay the fines may be allowed to perform community service, said Tom Robinson, the city’s director of community resources.

The council is expected to give final approval later this month.
