LOS ANGELES : Officers Will Hand Out Trading Cards to Youths

Police officer trading cards, each containing a safety message, will be handed out to youths by cops on the beat, Police Chief Willie L. Williams said Thursday.

The Los Angeles Police Department has produced 294,000 of the colorful, bilingual cards to promote traffic safety and drug prevention, said Officer Andrea Grossman of the traffic safety unit.

There are 49 different cards, Grossman said, featuring photographs of people, places or equipment associated with police work.

“It’s really going to be focused on safety,” said Williams, who touted the card program during his monthly meeting with lawyers.

A card featuring Williams’ picture gives a short biography on the back, along with a quote from the chief: “I won’t drive or ride without wearing a seat belt. It’s foolish to risk your life if you don’t have to.”

Another card, with a picture of bike patrol officers, warns children to wear helmets when riding bikes. Other cards show pictures of police dogs, helicopters and officers who work in various divisions of the department.

The cost of printing the cards was underwritten primarily by donations from private citizens, Williams said.
