FULLERTON : Single Mothers to Be Honored

Share

Single mothers in the Truslow Avenue neighborhood will be honored today with an early Mother’s Day party.

The mothers, most of whom work to support their children but earn minimum or below-minimum wages, rarely are treated to special tributes that recognize their sacrifices as single parents, said event organizer Jimmy Ramos, founder of La Escuelita del Pueblo, a makeshift school where free, weekend English classes are offered.

“They’re getting this fiesta because they are part of this society,” Ramos said. “They work a lot and are underappreciated and, sometimes, even degraded. We want them to know that they are valuable and that we are here to support them.”

The mothers will be treated to a piano recital, songs by neighborhood children, poetry readings, Mexican folkloric and Aztec dance shows, Mexican food and a dance from 2 to 7 p.m. at La Escuelita on Truslow Avenue.

Ramos said community members are encouraged to donate gifts, food and clothing. To contribute, visit the school or call (714) 449-9633.
