BOYLE HEIGHTS : All-Star Basketball to Benefit Roosevelt

Share

Roosevelt High School will host the second annual Celebrity Basketball Game on Saturday to raise funds for the school’s beautification project.

Organizers hope to raise $15,000, double what they made last year, to renovate landmarks at the 75-year-old campus. One of the projects targeted would be to renovate the Lindbergh Fountain, which was built after Charles Lindbergh made his first transatlantic flight in 1927.

Another project that needs to be revived is the Japanese Garden, which was built by Japanese students in the early years of the school but covered over during World War II when the students and their families were interned.

The school also wants to start a student museum to document Roosevelt’s history, said alumnus Ralph Carmona, who is also active in the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce.

“There are lots of areas that need to be renovated, new stuff planted and murals done,” Carmona said. “The campus is so old, there’s just so much” to do.

The game will feature television stars from NBC-TV’s “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Fox-TV’s “Melrose Place” and the syndicated “American Gladiators.” It starts at 6 p.m. at the school’s gym, 456 S. Mathews St.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for students.
