Hornaday Trucks to His Third Victory

Ron Hornaday Jr. of Palmdale overcame a mid-race pass by Joe Ruttman to score his third SuperTruck victory of the season Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash.

Hornaday, driving a Chevrolet from the outside of the front row, grabbed the lead in the first turn when the Chevrolet of pole-sitter Steve Portenga failed to come up to speed. Hornaday led through the Lap 76 service break, although Ruttman’s Ford never was more than a half-second behind.

Ruttman, of Upland, made a move on Lap 80, catching Hornaday in lapped traffic in the fourth turn of the 0.646-mile asphalt oval. Ruttman’s time in front was brief, however, as Hornaday re-passed on Lap 87 and won by 2.3 seconds.

“I knew I messed up and that this was going to be one of the toughest guys to get back around,” Hornaday said of Ruttman. “He had a little (less) gear and I was able to get up beside him. He gave me the outside (in Turn 1) and I went around him.”

Hornaday, who averaged 79.228 m.p.h. for the 96.6 miles, won $28,100 and added to his lead in the driver standings over Butch Miller, who ran third.

Hornaday has 966 points to 939 for Miller after six of 20 scheduled events.
