Long Beach Official Is New Vice Chancellor

Jerry Mandel, vice president for university relations at Cal State Long Beach, has been appointed vice chancellor for advancement at UC Irvine.

Mandel succeeds Kathleen Jones, who left to become head of advancement for Georgetown University. Mandel will also oversee alumni relations and the UCI public relations department.

During his seven years at Cal State Long Beach, Mandel raised more than $84 million. He was vice president and chief advancement officer at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas for two years before joining Cal State Long Beach.

Local Debaters Place High in Tournament

Saddleback College took second place and Orange Coast College finished in a fourth-place tie with Southwestern Illinois in the National Community College Speech and Debate Tournament. The event was held in San Francisco last month and drew 84 teams from across the country.

The weeklong tournament was won by the College of DuPage in Illinois, which also took the national title in 1990.

Summer Schedules Will Not Be Mailed

Summer session schedules will not be mailed to county residents this year, saving $50,000 in postage and printing costs, college officials said.

The schedules are available on campus and at local libraries, community centers, high schools and other community locations.

The college has added about 15 classes to the summer session for a total of 125.

Applications are now being accepted in the campus admissions and records office.

Professor Named to Social Ecology Chair

A University of Arizona public policy professor has been appointed to the endowed Warmington Chair in Social Ecology. Helen Ingram, director of the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy at the University of Arizona, will join UCI on July 1.

UCI Social Ecology Dean Daniel Stokols said Ingram is considered a world leader in the academic field of public policy, particularly in natural resource management. The Warmington Chair was established in 1989 with a pledge of $300,000 from Robert and Lori Warmington.
