State Cancer Society Elects Thomas Gates as President

Thomas Gates, chief of radiation oncology at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, has been elected president of the board of directors of the American Cancer Society’s California division. Gates is former president of the organization’s Long Beach-Harbor-Southeast unit. . . . Freda Hinsche Otto was appointed vice president for major gifts at St. Mary Medical Center Foundation, a philanthropic organization that supports the medical center.

The Port of Long Beach awarded $1,000 scholarships to Cal State Long Beach international business students Clara Itskovitch of Torrance and Katherine Wells of Sonora.

Barbi Mason, an official with the Long Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, was elected president of the Assn. for Convention Operations Management, a national organization of convention operations directors, managers and coordinators.

Gary C. Sherwin, director of media relations with the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been appointed vice president of marketing for the Long Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach has appointed three new department heads: Douglas Cunningham, infant special care unit; James Boyd, pediatric rehabilitation, and J. Carlos Maggi, pediatric critical care.

Gary Prewitt of Paramount has been named administrative director of Long Beach Community Hospital Medical Center.

Richard Thompson, 10, placed first in his age division at the Junior Drag Racing League Championships at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Richard, who attends Escalona Elementary School in La Mirada, received $5,200 in scholarships.
