LOS ANGELES : Holden’s Proposal Defends Need for Affirmative Action

Share

Los Angeles City Councilman Nate Holden on Wednesday introduced a motion urging his colleagues to oppose a proposed ballot measure that would seek to undo affirmative action programs in hiring and contracting by state agencies.

No date has been set to consider the motion, which seeks to have the council go on record against the California “civil rights initiative,” a proposed statewide measure that would challenge affirmative action.

Supporters of the measure will soon seek approval of their ballot language by the state attorney general and then plan to launch a drive to gather more than 1 million signatures to get their measure on the November, 1996, ballot.

Holden’s motion maintains that affirmative action programs are still critical to fighting “widespread” discrimination.
