FOUNTAIN VALLEY : An Experiment to Save on Science Camp Costs

Share

Because of the high cost of science-oriented camping trips, Fountain Valley School District is exploring other programs that would serve more students but cost less money.

The Board of Trustees last week gave approval for students at two schools to attend outdoor science camps that are less costly than current programs.

“We have been looking for some possible alternatives because of the cost and due to the high level of supervision required by other camps,” said Catherine Follett, director of curriculum and instruction.

Follett said outdoor science programs that students now attend are about $250 a child, and “those costs are really escalating.”

Individual schools and parent organizations raise the money to send students to outdoor education programs approved by the district, including the Orange County Department of Education’s outdoor science school.

Follett said that James H. Cox Elementary and Kazuo Masuda Middle School have requested permission to send students to Arrowhead Ranch, which offers an outdoor program for about $150 a student.

Iosjiro Oka and Robert Gisler elementary schools are not participating in any outdoor education program for the 1995-96 school year, Follett said, because of the cost.
