PACOIMA : Administrators Keep Word to Bookworms

Share

Students at Pacoima’s Telfair Avenue School pigged out on books this year, logging a total of 3 million minutes reading authors ranging from Charles Dickens to Dr. Seuss.

As an incentive to the school’s 1,500 students in pre-kindergarten through the sixth grade, administrators promised that Principal Consuelo Garcia would kiss a pig if the students achieved their reading goals.

On Wednesday, Garcia puckered up and would have made E. B. White, author of “Charlotte’s Web,” proud: She bussed the swine several times, to the squeals and delight of campus bookworms.

Assistant Principal Ivy Morritt also fulfilled her promise to climb up on the school’s roof and read a book.

“I was supposed to sit up there and read children’s stories all day, but I only lasted about an hour,” she said.

The program was part of the school’s Reading Roundup project, which emphasizes improving students’ reading skills.

El Pollo Loco provided food for Wednesday’s party and a local corral brought horses for students to ride.
