TRACK AND FIELD : CSUN Pair Second-Best at Midpoint

Chris Kanowsky of Cal State Northridge was in second place in the decathlon and Carlene Jones of CSUN was second in the heptathlon after the first day of the American West Conference track and field championships Wednesday at Cal State Sacramento.

Kanowsky, a junior from Long Beach City College, had 3,142 points after the first five events of the decathlon to trail Layne Richards of Southern Utah by 62 points.

Kanowsky opened the competition with a time of 11.94 seconds in the 100 meters, and followed with marks of 18 feet 7 1/2 inches in the long jump, 35-5 in the shotput, 6-5 3/4 in the high jump and 54.31 in the 400.

Aaron Masters and Brian Marston of CSUN were in third (3,004) and fourth (2,481).

Jones had 2,636 points after the first four events to trail Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Diane Korbel (2,800).
