Smeltzer was the name of a tiny town that formed in the early 20th Century in an area that is now home to the Huntington Beach Mall.
The town was named for D.E. Smeltzer, who introduced celery to Orange County. A packinghouse and post office were built on the site, near Edinger Avenue and the Southern Pacific Railroad.
But Smeltzer never took off as a town.
The post office eventually closed, and the area remained largely agricultural until after World War II.
As suburban development grew, the area was annexed by Huntington Beach.
