Perry, Hulbert Share Lead at Westchester

Chris Perry, who lost his PGA Tour playing card in 1993 and regained it by setting the Nike Tour earnings record last year, and Mike Hulbert, the tour’s only one-handed putter, were at six-under-par 136 Friday and sharing the lead midway through the Buick Classic in Harrison, N.Y.

Perry, the 35-year-old son of former major league pitcher Jim Perry and nephew of Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry, had six birdies in a four-under 67. Hulbert, 37, had a second 68 over the 6,779-yard Westchester Country Club.

The two were one shot ahead of first-round leader Doug Martin, who had a 70, and U.S. Open champion Ernie Els, who had a 69.

J.C. Snead holed out a 124-yard nine-iron second shot for an eagle on No. 11 and used it to build an opening-round four-under 66 and a two-shot advantage at the Senior PGA’s Bell Atlantic Classic in Malvern, Pa.

Dave Stockton, Isao Aoki, Jim Colbert and former PGA Commissioner Deane Beman were at 68 on a raw, overcast day at the Chester Valley Country Club.

Tracy Hanson, a 23-year-old rookie, shot a five-under 67 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the $500,000 Star Bank LPGA Classic at Dayton Ohio.

Tennis

Seventh-seeded Thomas Muster overpowered No. 2 Michael Chang, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome to extend his clay-court winning streak to 26 matches. In a semifinal, Muster will face No. 4 Wayne Ferreira, who beat No. 12 Stefan Edberg, 6-2, 6-0.

Advancing to the other semifinal were No. 3 Goran Ivanisevic and No. 8 Sergi Bruguera.

Sixth-seeded Brett Hansen and unseeded Adam Peterson of USC reached an all-Pacific 10 semifinal at the NCAA men’s championships at Athens, Ga.

Hansen defeated California’s Michael Hill, 6-0, 6-7, 6-0, and will face No. 4 Jeff Salzenstein of Stanford. Peterson defeated No. 8 David Caldwell of North Carolina and will face top-seeded Sargis Sargsian of Arizona State.

UCLA’s Jane Chi, ranked No. 1 nationally, lost, 6-2, 6-4, to 12th-ranked Stacy Sheppard of Georgia in the third round of the NCAA women’s championships at Pepperdine.

With the victory over the third-seeded Chi, Sheppard will be joined in today’s semifinals by the rest of the top seeds--No. 1 Kelly Pace of Texas, No. 2 Keri Phebus of UCLA and No. 4 Jill Craybas of Florida.

Basketball

Former Portland coach Rick Adelman was introduced as coach of the Golden State Warriors.

A six-month internal investigation at Georgia Southern in Statesboro confirmed allegations that Chris Parker, a recruit from a junior college, was given academic help and also found other violations of NCAA rules, the school said.

Former Oklahoma State player Randy Rutherford pleaded guilty to threatening to blow up a city block in Stillwater and was fined $100.

Pete Gaudet, chosen by Mike Krzyzewski to take over the Duke team during Krzyzewski’s absence in the second half of last season, resigned from the Blue Devil program.

Boxing

Evander Holyfield weighed in at 209 3/4 pounds and Ray Mercer at 224 for their fight tonight in Atlantic City, N.J., where another bout features Hector Camacho defending his International Boxing Federation welterweight championship against Homer Gibbins.

Football

Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell said the conference will suspend its present football consortium after the 1995 season.

Two current full members of the Big West, Nevada Las Vegas and San Jose State, are leaving to join the Western Athletic Conference in 1996. Four other schools who are associated with the Big West for football only--Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Northern Illinois and Southwestern Louisiana--will compete in the conference this season then be allowed to pursue other options for their programs, Farrell said.

Pittsburgh Steeler cornerback Deon Figures will probably be out until midseason after being shot in the left leg last week while driving in Compton.

Figures, the Steelers’ 1993 first-round draft pick, had surgery in Pittsburgh to repair a torn knee tendon.
