Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi; Founded L.A. Zen Center

Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi, 64, abbot of the Zen Center of Los Angeles and credited with being a seminal influence on the growth of Zen Buddhism in the United States. Born in Japan, Maezumi Roshi (Roshi is a term for Zen master) was ordained as a monk at age 11 and studied at a monastery in Japan before coming to the United States in 1956. He founded the Zen Center in Los Angeles in 1969. In Tokyo on May 14 of an apparent heart attack.
