NCAA SOFTBALL : Harding’s One-Hitter, Homer Lift Bruins; Matadors, Titans in Final
Tanya Harding shut down Hawaii on one hit and homered with two teammates aboard Saturday to end the game for second-ranked UCLA, which beat the Rainbows, 9-0, in regional play of the NCAA softball tournament at Columbia, S.C.
Harding’s eighth homer, to right field, came with two out in the sixth inning, and as soon as it was hit, the game was ended because of the tournament’s eight-run rule.
Harding (13-1) struck out four and beat Hawaii’s Brooke Wilkins (29-8).
At Cal State Northridge, the host Matadors did things the hard way, losing to Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, on Saturday and playing their way back into today’s championship game through the losers’ bracket.
Northridge then pounded out 10 hits and got a grand slam from catcher Scia Maumausoplo and strong pitching from Kathy Blake-Small to beat Illinois State, 11-4.
The Matadors play Fullerton today at 12:30, with a second game to follow if the Titans do not win.
