CAMARILLO, SOMIS : Final Malathion Flight Scheduled

Share

Agricultural officials are set to conduct their 14th and final aerial application of the pesticide malathion over eastern Camarillo and Somis on Tuesday in the battle against the crop-destroying Mediterranean fruit fly.

Barring inclement weather, the now-familiar quartet of helicopters--one guiding and three spraying--will lift off from Camarillo Airport at 9 p.m. for the four-hour mission, according to Doug Hendrix, spokesman for the state and federal Cooperative Medfly Project.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service are forecasting mild winds with no chance of rain in Ventura County through Tuesday.

State regulations forbid the spraying of pesticides when there is a 50% or greater chance of rain within 24 hours of an application or when winds exceed 10 m.p.h. over the spray zone.
