Snyder to Replace Perry at La Quinta

Jim Perry has resigned as basketball coach at La Quinta and will be replaced by Craig Snyder, Perry said Monday.

Perry has been the Aztecs’ coach 12 of the past 13 years. He was 161-152 and won four Garden Grove League titles.

Perry will remain as the school’s athletic director.

Snyder was the coach at Savanna the last three seasons. The Rebels reached the Southern Section Division III-A playoffs all three seasons and reached the semifinals in 1993-94.

Mater Dei named Geri Gainey, an assistant girls’ basketball coach at the school, as its girls’ athletic director. Gainey, an All-Section basketball player at Mater Dei, replaces Patty Smith, will become a full-time science teacher and the aquatics coordinator in addition to her duties as girls’ swimming coach.

Eighteen players, including five from Orange County, have been named to the U.S. Youth National boys’ volleyball team that will compete in late August at the Youth World Championships in Puerto Rico.

Among those selected were Capistrano Valley’s Chris Seiffert and Beau Rawi, Woodbridge’s Jared Dannis, El Toro’s Matthew Mauney and Corona del Mar’s Blair Hoppe.

They will train at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego. The World Championships are Aug. 24-Sept. 3.
