BELLFLOWER : Caution Signs Required for Ice Cream Trucks

Share

The City Council this week approved an ordinance requiring all ice cream trucks that cruise local streets to bear signs warning motorists about the presence of children.

Although the law went into effect immediately, city officials said they would not enforce it until they can get the signs made and distributed to the three ice cream vendors licensed to do business in Bellflower, possibly within two weeks.

The yellow, reflectorized signs with black lettering will be 12 inches high and 18 inches long and must be mounted on the back of the trucks. They will say, “Caution: Watch for Children.”

City Councilwoman Ruth A. Gilson, who suggested the idea earlier this month, said some ice cream trucks look like ordinary vans, and motorists often pass them without exercising caution. “It’s a safety hazard for children,” she said.
